Bactroban Cream (Bactroban Ointment)

Generic name: Mupirocin

Mupirocin (pseudomonic acid A, or Bactroban) is an antibiotic originally isolated from Pseudomonas fluorescens. It is used topically, and is primarily effective against Gram-positive bacteria. ach gram of Bactroban ointment 2% contains 20 mg mupirocin in a bland water miscible ointment base (polyethylene glycol ointment) consisting of polyethylene glycol 400 and polyethylene glycol 3350. Mupirocin is a naturally occurring antibiotic.

Bactroban Dosage

  • Apply a small amount of Bactroban to the affected area 3 times a day. Cover the treated area with gauze if you want.
  • A small amount of Bactroban Ointment should be applied to the affected area three times daily. The area treated may be covered with a gauze dressing if desired. Patients not showing a clinical response within 3 to 5 days should be re-evaluated.

Uses of Bactroban

  • Bactroban ointment is used for the treatment of certain types of skin infections such as school sores (impetigo), infection of the hair root and boils.
  • Bactroban is also used when infection occurs in skin damaged by eczema, dermatitis, psoriasis, herpes (cold sores), wounds, cuts, grazes, insect bites, minor burns etc.
  • Mupirocin is used to treat infected cuts or wounds.
  • Eradication of Staphylococcal bacteria from the nostrils to prevent and treat infection

Side Effects of Bactroban

Side effects cannot be anticipated. If any develop or change in intensity, inform your doctor as soon as possible. Only your doctor can determine if it is safe for you to continue using Bactroban. Side effects may include:

  • Burning, pain, stinging

Warnings and precautions before taking Bactroban:

  • Continued or prolonged use of Bactroban may result in the growth of bacteria that do not respond to Bactroban and can cause a secondary infection.
  • Avoid contact with eyes.
  • If your skin shows signs of an allergic reaction or irritation, stop using Bactroban and consult your doctor.
  • Bactroban Ointment is not formulated for use on mucosal surfaces. Intranasal use has been associated with isolated reports of stinging and drying. A paraffin-based formulation-Bactroban Nasal® (mupirocin calcium ointment) -- is available for intranasal use.

Drug Interaction :-

Other topical medications may change the way that your skin absorbs mupirocin topical. Avoid using other products on the same area at the same time unless directed to do so by your doctor.

Overdose

An overdose of mupirocin topical is rare. Consult a doctor if you suspect an overdose. No symptoms of an overdose are known.
